A herniated disc (often called a slipped or bulging disc) happens when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes out and presses on nearby nerves. It can cause sharp back or neck pain and pain that travels into the arm or leg. Dr. Todd Luther and Dr. Kaylee English offer gentle, non-surgical care to help reduce pain and restore movement.
Common Symptoms
- Low back or neck pain that may be sharp or deep
- Pain, numbness or tingling down an arm or leg
- Muscle weakness in the arm or leg
- Pain that worsens with sitting, bending or lifting
How We Help
- A careful exam to see which levels of the spine are involved
- Low-force drop table adjustments, which many disc patients find comfortable
- Therapeutic massage to relax guarding muscles around the injured area
- Guidance on positions, lifting and activity while you heal
- Referral for imaging or a specialist when it is needed

What to Expect at Your First Visit
Disc problems need a careful approach. Your first visit begins with a detailed history and a hands-on exam of spinal motion, nerve function, reflexes and muscle strength. If you already have an MRI or X-ray, bring the report. If you don’t, we’ll let you know whether imaging makes sense. Treatment uses comfortable, low-force techniques, and we adjust the plan to how your body responds.
Herniated Disc FAQ
Is chiropractic care safe for a herniated disc?
For many people, yes, when care is gentle and based on a thorough exam. Drop table adjustments use very little force, and we never push through sharp pain. If your exam shows signs that need a medical specialist, we’ll refer you.
Do I need surgery?
Many disc injuries improve with conservative care over time. Surgery is usually considered when symptoms are severe, keep getting worse or don’t respond to other treatment. We’ll help you understand your options and coordinate with your doctor if needed.
Bulging, slipped or herniated — what’s the difference?
People use these terms in different ways. In general, a bulge spreads out evenly while a herniation pushes through a weak spot. Either can irritate a nerve, and both are part of what we assess.
